Motion Design or motion graphics are graphic elements in motion. One day, when static graphics have ceased to surprise her began to animate, so was born Motion Design, which today has become a whole world of different directions.
Movies, graphic animated screensavers used in online games, media, advertising, film, television, education, etc., so motion design rapidly evolving and its relevance is growing every year.
Who is a motion designer
A motion designer is a magician and wizard who brings static objects to life and turns them into something exciting.
Motion design has already captured the 2D and 3D worlds, so there are those who deal with animation 2D graphics, there are those who deals with three-dimensional, and of course there are universal. In any case a good specialist must understand not only the animation, but also, first and foremost, in graphic design, as well as composition, typography, color theory, color psychology and even programming (do not be alarmed, all we learn gradually, increasing the skils).
Where to start training
It is best to start your journey with the study of design in general – from statics. Learn color theory, composition and typography.
Composition is the foundation of every frame in animation, and how harmoniously arranged and linked elements, depends on how your work looks.
But even a very good composition can be spoiled by improper color choices, so pay special attention to this.
Next, you can move on to the study of animation: here, for example, will help you books on timing and 12 principles of animation from Disney.
Now, let’s move on to the study of software packages, which will work. A rough list for the beginner:
- Adobe Illustrator for preparing vector images that will be animated;
- Adobe Premiere Pro or similar for simple editing;
- Adobe After Effects is a great program for animation and editing. It has a lot of possibilities! Must have any motion designer.
- Cinema 4d is a program for three-dimensional animation. Its advantage over other 3D editors is that it easily interacts with Adobe After Effects.
Do not break your head and come up with video from scratch, it is best to first repeat the finished work and learn from the masters: find a project that you like and try to repeat it. Of course first choose the simple ones, and then gradually complicate them. Having got your hand in such a way, the ideas will begin to appear only when you see a beautiful static picture.
Since you initially need to create an attractive portfolio, I advise you to take good works of graphic designers, for example, find them on the dribble, choose a picture you want to animate, write to the author asking him to use his work (usually everyone agrees and is even ready to send a development file) and start animating. This way the portfolio will be very beautiful and professional.
